Can a thermal cure relieve knee arthritis?
-
A randomized double-blind study in a Tunisian thermal centre has demonstrated the efficiency of thermal cures in reducing pain and improving functional capacity and quality of life among gonarthritis patients.
The beneficial effect was perceived immediately after the cure, then six months and one year hereafter.
At the international level, random clinical tests were published on the effect of different forms of hydrotherapy (spa, baths with different sorts of waters, etc) on patients suffering from knee and hip arthritis. Results show that such treatment could improve quality of life, movement amplitude, functional capacity, severity of illness index and pain and medication reduction.
We underscore the benefit of this natural therapy, which has no side effects, so that hydrotherapy could be considered an interesting therapeutic option, especially within a multidisciplinary approach to medical treatment.

What type of cure is recommended to relieve psoriasis symptoms ?
-
A study conducted at the Korbous Spa on the northern coast of Tunisia showed a reduction in the surface and the inflammatory, scaly aspect of dermatological psoriatic lesions, certainly thanks to the mechanical, thermal and chemical effects of this thermal water.
In psoriatic arthritis, the observed beneficial results of balneotherapy, with sea or thermal water, associated with sun exposure could convey that it could be a useful treatment as a complement to conventional treatments.

Can we relieve the symptoms of varicose veins ?
-
In the case of varicose veins, balneotherapy sessions with a sulphur-rich thermal water for 12 days, combined with a conventional treatment with elastic compression, improve some parameters related to the quality of life (pain, emotional experience) and the venoarterial reflex more than in the conventional treatment alone.
Alternating cold and hot water reduce leg volumes and ankle and calf circumference, in addition to subjective symptoms such as night cramps and the discomfort resulting from prolonged sitting and standing positions.

Does hydrotherapy have side-effects ?
-
Given its vasodilator effect, prolonged hot baths and steam baths are not recommended in the case of inflammation, fever and cancer. They can also trigger or worsen migraine, varicose vein and rosacea. Pregnant women and patients suffering from high unbalanced high blood pressure, diabetes or cardiovascular diseases should avoid them; hence the importance of a medical check-up before each treatment.
Skin infections are also contraindicated to hydrotherapy care, especially pool baths, to avoid water contamination, even if the water is regularly analysed and disinfected.
