TUNIS, Oct. 16, 2010 (TAP)
The 63rd General Assembly of the World Federation of Hydrotherapy and Climatotherapy (FEMTEC) will be held next November 1-2 in Tunis on the theme of: "Tradition, Quality and Innovation in Spa Sector."
Tunisia, which is currently vice-President of FEMTEC, will be during these two days, an international centre bringing together several experts of the sector from China, Cuba, France, Italy, Hungary, Japan, Romania, Russia and Ukraine to promote the exchange of expertise in the area of traditional medicine and discuss problems that hinder the development of this specialty in some countries.
Mr. Frej Daoues, CEO of the Hydrotherapy Office, who held a news conference, on Saturday, to present this event, underlined that the choice of Tunisia to host the 63rd assembly of FEMTEC, is the result of the country's achievements in this field. He reminded, in this regard, that Tunisia was ranked second in the world in matters of thalassotherapy. According to recent statistics, spas in Tunisia had hosted in 2009 about 36,000 curists compared with 7,000 in 1997.
For his part, Mr. Umberto Sulimene, Secretary-General of FEMTEC underlined that the history of hydrotherapy in Tunisia dates back to the Roman times, a period during which the use of thermal waters was a cult, a healing art or even a lifestyle. This tradition, he added, was one of the factors that contributed to make Tunisia a prime destination in this area. He underlined that with its temperate climate and its natural landscapes, Tunisia is distinguished, compared to other destinations in the Mediterranean region, by the establishment of a clear strategy aimed to promote the sector of spa.
Mr. Sulimene pointed out that Tunisia has now all prerequisites (qualified human resources, quality services...) entitling it to become a regional centre of spas.
He underlined that this event will represent the first step towards signing a co-operation agreement between the Hydrotherapy Office and the Russian Cosmonaut Training Centre to encourage astronauts to stay in the country's spas before and after their space trips.
It should be noted that the holding of this event coincided with the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the creation of the Hydrotherapy Office.
