Nabeul, the capital of Cap Bon, is one of the renowned tourist destinations in Tunisia particularly known for unique Tunisian craftworks, pottery in particular. It is situated on the south coast close to the peninsula of Cap Bon and is the largest town in the peninsula. Nabeul is situated 70 km southeast of Tunis. The entire amazing coastline of Cap Bon is embraced by Nabeul thus making it one of the most visited places in Tunisia
It also has beautiful beaches and packed market on Fridays where you can bargain for the finest goods and items like the plaited mats, embroidery and woven fabrics. In this authentic city of pottery and ceramics, tourists can view the potter’s wheel spinning out the astonishing work of art. Nabeul also has a museum which can be visited to view the Roman and Punic artifacts.
Nabeul has a very ancient history which dates to Roman times. In the ancient times, it was known as Neapolis and was once the centre where garum was produced which was used for seasoning all sorts of food. The garum usually was made by leaving fish and intestines with salt in an open tank and had a foul smell. However, to produce it in private home was regarded illegal. In the third Punic War it was occupied by the Romans. In the 2nd century AD it earned the status of colonia and in the 16th and 17th century, the Andalusian refugees took shelter in Nabeul and their influence is marked in the local art
